Galle is a city shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonists since the 16th century. The most iconic landmarks include the Galle Fort and the lighthouse. The fortified old city was originally established by the Portuguese, and the Dutch later extended the stone sea wall during their occupation. It is also one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka.
The city is best experienced on foot. It is surrounded by Dutch colonial buildings, museums, antique shops, cafes, and an exotic old trading port, which are all must-see attractions. A recent addition to the area is whale watching, as these sea giants swim not far from Galle city.
The ideal time to visit is from December to March when the temperature is cooler than the usual 30°C.
Best places to stay in Galle are Galle Fort Hotel, Amangalla, Amari Galle, Jetwing Lighthouse, Amari Galle, Yara Galle Fort, Taru Villas, The Fort Printers, The Bartizan, 20 Middle Street, Jetwing Kurulubedda, The Postcard Galle and Lady Hill.
