Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, also known as Sri Pada Wilderness Sanctuary, is a tropical rainforest surrounding Sri Pada (Adam's Peak). It ranks as the third largest among the 50 sanctuaries in the country. The Peak Wilderness area lies at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 7,360 feet above sea level. This region is the source of several major rivers in the country, including the Kelani, Kalu, and Walave. Additionally, some tributaries of the Mahaweli River originate here, giving rise to a stunning waterfall.
The area is of great significance to Buddhists, as Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) has been a sacred site since ancient times. All paths and roads leading to Sri Pada pass through the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary.
There are no hotels, holiday bungalows, or tourist lodges within the sanctuary to preserve the wilderness. However, you are permitted to explore the wilderness with a tracker or professional guide after obtaining approval from the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Department.
It's best to avoid the rainy season due to the risk of flash floods.
