Jaffna (Sinhala: යාපනය, Tamil: யாழ்ப்பாணம்)

Updated: Apr 14

jaffna

Jaffna is the primary city on the northern peninsula of Sri Lanka. Due to the predominantly Hindu population, you'll notice a significant cultural distinction from other regions of Sri Lanka. Additionally, the culture is heavily influenced by South India.

After three decades of civil war, Jaffna has become accessible to the world. The mangoes here are considered the best in the country, if not globally. Many dishes are vegetarian, reflecting the Hindu majority. However, there's no need to worry, as the vegetarian cuisine and dosa are incredibly satisfying and packed with flavor.

The most convenient way to reach Jaffna is by car. Alternatively, you can take a direct train from Colombo or a bus. Traveling by car is recommended because it allows you to explore other places along the way and make the long journey more enjoyable with breaks.

The best time to visit is from January to March, when the air is cooler compared to the usual dry high temperatures. The northern part of Sri Lanka experiences hot, dry weather, with an average temperature of around 28°C, depending on the month. November is cooler and can be wet due to monsoons.

Places to stay are The Valampuri, Green Grass Hotel & Restaurant, North Gate by Jetwing, Jaffna Heritage Hotel, Jetwing Jaffna, cedar, The Thinnai,Allai Samudra Beach Resort.
