The hike to Pidurangala rock typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on your fitness level. This rock formation is located a few kilometers north of the Sigiriya fortress. While there is less to see here compared to Sigiriya, the view from the top is stunning, almost like a vantage point for Sigiriya.
At the base, you'll discover the Pidurangala Buddhist Temple and caves. According to ancient chronicles, the temple's history dates back to the 1st century BC. The chronicles state that monks residing at Sigiriya were moved to Pidurangala by King Kashyapa before he constructed his fortress at Sigiriya.
Pidurangala appeals more to nature enthusiasts, whereas Sigiriya is for those interested in history and culture. The ideal times to climb Pidurangala are at sunrise or sunset. Sunrise, in particular, is less crowded. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water.
