Kandy Esala Perahara

Updated: Apr 22

Kandy Esala Perahara

The Kandy Esala Perahara is conducted to pay tribute to the sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha and to honor the four guardians. This renowned festival takes place annually in July and August, spanning approximately 10 days, beginning in the first week of August. It is considered one of the most vibrant religious parades globally, boasting a rich history.

Elephants play a crucial role in the perahera, marching alongside drummers, Kandyan dancers, and fire jugglers. Each elephant is adorned in stunning costumes and lights, making it difficult to decide which one is the most beautiful. The Tooth Relic is carried by the main elephant, which is carefully selected from birth.

Due to high demand, hotel and viewpoint prices increase. It is advisable to book your accommodations early.
