Updated: Apr 24

The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa)

The Tooth Relic of Buddha is located in the former Royal Palace Complex of the Kingdom of Kandy. This relic was pivotal in Sri Lankan history, as possession of it signified control over Sri Lanka. Kandy was the last kingdom of Sri Lanka before the British invasion and subsequent capture of the island. The temple housing the golden-roofed Tooth Relic and the palace complex is recognized as a world heritage site.

According to ancient texts, the relic was brought to Sri Lanka between 301-328 and was entrusted to the reigning Sri Lankan king for protection. It was subsequently passed down to each monarch as a symbol of the right to govern the country. During prayer times, the relic attracts worshipers and tourists. The actual tooth of Buddha is not visible, as it is enclosed within a golden casket.

The palace complex also includes museums, small temples, shrines, art, and wood carvings. A knowledgeable guide can offer a comprehensive tour. Remember to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and legs, as this is a sacred site. You can also visit Kandy Garrison Cemetery and the World Buddhist Museum.

There are numerous accommodation options to suit your budget. Some of the top hotels include Hotel Suisse, Randholee Resort and Spa, Mahaweli Reach Hotel, Royal Classic Hotel, Stone House Kandy, The Golden Crown Hotel, Earl's Regent Kandy, OZO Kandy, and Queen's Hotel.
