Nuwara Eliya, situated in the Central Province, is a must-visit destination in Sri Lanka. Surrounded by lush green hills, it is often referred to as 'Little England'. The city sits 1868 meters above sea level. Traveling there is easiest by car or taxi. While some trains do depart from Colombo and Polgahawela, they don't reach Nuwara Eliya directly. You'll need to travel to the nearest city and then take a tuk-tuk or taxi to reach your destination.
Whether you choose to travel by train or car, the journey to Nuwara Eliya offers stunning views ideal for photography, featuring waterfalls, tea plantations, and misty mountains. Many buildings still retain old English architecture and gardens. Visitors often spend a night in Nuwara Eliya to visit World's End (Horton Plains National Park) early in the morning. Afterward, they typically take the renowned train ride to Ella. Due to high demand, it's advisable to book train tickets in advance.
The temperature ranges from 12°C to 14°C year-round, dropping even lower at night. The best time to visit is from January to April. Although the days are cooler compared to the rest of the country, there's less rain, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty of the waterfalls and the lush green tea plantations on the surrounding mountains.
There are accommodations for all budgets. Some prefer old tea estate bungalows. Some of the best locations are The Grand Hotel, St Andrews, Araliya Green City, Kent Cottage, Calamander Lake Gregory.
